The Story

Because of its goodness, the product was mentioned by Norman Douglas, who, in 1915, wrote in his book 'OldCalabria': '...stands the prosperous town of Saracena, famous from centuries past for its Muscat. It is obtained from grapes brought by the Saracens from Maskat'. And a few years earlier, in 1901, George Gissing in 'By the Jonian sea' wrote: 'I remember as the only thing worthy of ancient Sybaris a white wine, pleasant to the palate, called moscato di Saracena'. On the table of the Roman Pontiffs, in the 16th century, we find 'Moscato di Saracena', much sought after and appreciated, which Cardinal Sirleto had sent by ship from Scalea and which rightfully became part of the pontifical wine store.
