The Cortona Syrah Achelo is produced on the Braccesca estate, an ancient farm of the Bracci counts from which both its name and its coat of arms derive: an arm protected by armor brandishing a sword. Its 340 hectares are now owned by the Antinori family who have decided to make it an estate with two souls, a union between the tradition of the Nobile of Montepulciano and the innovation and emergence of the Syrah of Cortona. The cellar, completely underground, is divided into two rooms used as a barrel room and a vat room, and is equipped with cutting-edge technology that blends with traditional attention to allow the qualities of the past to adapt, evolve and express themselves in the future.
The Braccesca Cortona Achelo is produced exclusively from Syrah grapes, which find in the clayey-loam soil of Cortona a perfect climate for cultivation, which tends to be dry and arid. After the harvest, the grapes are taken to the cellar for destemming and crushing, and the must is then transferred to special stainless steel tanks for pre-fermentation maceration, which takes place cold to enhance the fruity notes of Syrah. Fermentation, which takes place in the same tanks, occurs at a controlled temperature of 25°C for approximately 10 days. The aging is divided: 70% is transferred to second- and third-use French oak barriques where malolactic fermentation also takes place, while the remaining part is transferred to steel. Bottling takes place in the autumn of the year following the harvest.
The term Achelo is inspired by the God "Achelo", present on the label and depicted in one of the most famous works of the Etruscan Academy of Cortona.
