The Story
Relaunched in 2016, the Nikka Whisky Yoichi Single Malt is produced at the Yoichi distillery in the town of the same name on the island of Hokkaido, where the founder Taketsuru, the father of Japanese whisky, identified a site in 1934 that was particularly suited to Scottish climate and environmental conditions. A pleasantly peaty whisky with a distinctive salty note, it is a blend of single malts aged for various years and therefore does not contain an age statement. The jewel in the Nikka crown, the historic Yoichi distillery houses a whisky museum and also preserves the distillation oven used when it was founded. Moreover, the Yoichi distillery, or "the Scotland of Japan," as it is known, is so tied to its roots that it still uses techniques such as the use of coal stills today. Nikka's Yoichi Single Malt Whisky is crafted from first-fill Hogshead Casks, crafted from bourbon casks using the traditional Scottish method. Its salty notes and smoky character are enhanced by the remarkably slow distillation and direct coal heating of the stills at this award-winning distillery. Having won numerous awards, including a Gold Award at the World Whiskies Awards, Nikka's Yoichi No Aged is a delicately peaty sipping whisky appreciated around the world, even by Scottish masters. Today, it is the most convincing answer to those who thought Scotch whisky could not produce extraordinary results outside of Scotland.
