The Story

San Marzano Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria DOP is a red wine made with 100% Primitivo grapes. It has obtained the DOC Primitivo di Manduria designation. It is produced in the San Marzano di San Giuseppe area in the province of Taranto, Puglia. Cantine San Marzano was founded in 1962 by 19 historic local winemakers. The cooperative has grown to include over 1,200 winemakers. Today, it produces elegant, well-structured wines that respect ancient Apulian traditions while using state-of-the-art equipment. The bottles reflect the characteristics of the local terroir and seasonal variations. San Marzano Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria takes its name from its early ripening. The origins of the grape variety are uncertain, but it is known that it was the Benedictine monks who first introduced it to Puglia, in the geographical area of Gioia del Colle, in the 17th century. The San Marzano Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria is made from a red grape with medium-good vigor, and the harvest takes place between late August and early September. The grape requires warm climates with low rainfall and wide temperature ranges. The soil, with its typical red color, thanks to the high presence of iron oxides, is characterized by a fine texture with a calcareous substrate. The hand-harvested grapes are left to macerate for 18 days on 80% of the mass and 25 days on 20% with selected native yeasts. Fermentation takes place between 24 and 26°C, while aging requires 12 months in fine French and American oak barriques.
