David, Lord Elcho, the eldest of the sons of the 5th Earl of Wemyss, was one of Prince Charles' greatest supporters during the Jacobite revolt of 1745 and for his significant role was crowned Colonel in the Prince's guard; he remained with the Prince until his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746 and was then forced into exile in France.
